Why this blog?

Calathea Sisters is your companion for tips and tricks for caring for your Marantaceae. We offer general background information and a forum for sharing experiences related to the arrowroot family.

Our blog is dedicated to helping plant lovers identify different Marantaceae species, offering valuable insights into their care, dispelling myths surrounding this plant family, and raising questions for discussion.

Calathea Sisters aims to create a community of plant lovers who appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of Marantaceae.

Our story

The beginning of our story is probably quite classic: As cat parents, we were looking for plants that are non-toxic to animals. In this search, we inevitably come across Marantaceae, although these are usually not recommended for plant beginners.

We skillfully ignored the latter, and so the first, second, and third Goeppertia plants were quickly followed by the tenth, twentieth, and now we have over 100 plants per household.

The interest, enthusiasm, and passion captivated us fast, and prayer plants rapidly became our daily topic of conversation - it perhaps even got a bit out of hand in the presence of others, so we earned the title "Calathea Sisters" not long after.

However, as soon as our passion gripped us, we also realized that there is a great deal of uncertainty, confusion, misinformation, and many unanswered questions surrounding this plant family – which we naturally wanted and still want to pursue.

And so we not only learned (and continue to learn) practically how to provide our plants with the best possible care and environment, how to deal with pests, which problems cause which symptoms, etc., but we also began to conduct intensive research, hold discussions - even with third parties - and, of course, train our eye, which always comes in handy when it comes to questions about identification.

And now we have a need to talk and would like to share our findings, experiences, thoughts and discussions so far.

Our mission and vision

Marantaceae, or "Calatheas", don't exactly have the best reputation. They're often considered bitches or divas and are dubbed accordingly. Perhaps because of this, they also don't seem to be particularly trendy.

Our mission is clear: We want to dispel myths, dispel misconceptions, and demonstrate in practice that prayer plants are not as demanding as their reputation suggests.

With this blog, we aim to help everyone, to the best of our knowledge and belief, understand the arrowroot family. We want to help identify plants and answer the most frequently asked questions in a simple and understandable way. Anyone interested in Marantaceae - whether a beginner or a seasoned expert - should feel at home here and find interesting articles, discussions, and thoughts on this plant family.

The Calathea Sisters

This is us - behind the scenes.

About me

Chantal (39 years old)

Unfortunately, my work as a department head often takes up a lot of my time.

That makes me all the more happy when I can spend my free time with my beloved kitten or pursue my favorite hobby.

Because, like my cat, I too enjoy "hunting"

– in my case, however, for prayer plants that we don't have yet.

And the "Marantaceae gods" are usually kind to me here – if I can also snag a good bargain, all the better.

About me

Anette (37 years old)

In "real life," I work part-time as a chemical-technical assistant, and my urge to analyze things, explore problems, and find solutions is also reflected in my passion for Marantaceae.

I love researching and always want to know the whys and wherefores.

I'm also the mother of three adorable tomcats who love my Marantaceae as much as I do

- sometimes they even show it by nibbling on the leaves.

I personally also prefer to "nibble" on vegetarian food - preferably in the comfort of my own home, because I generally don't cope so well with crowds around me anymore.

Marantaceae are our passion

As passionate lovers of this plant family, we are not satisfied with "simple" answers, so all information is checked multiple times to the best of our knowledge and belief. Likewise, if you ask us a question, our answer is thought through and discussed beforehand.

Symptoms – unless a clear, massive pest infestation – should always be considered individually.

Our tips and tricks are based on our own experiences in two households, each with over 100 plants. This means that this is at most a personal recommendation and not a 100% guarantee for happy Marantaceae.

We are very much looking forward to sharing our passion with like-minded people, exchanging experiences and having interesting conversations and discussions.

You too are welcome to become part of the “Calathea Sisters”.
